Now that the top terraces have all been tiled, it is time to finish off the pool deck area. The deck tiles are laid on pedestals, so that it is both level with the pool coping stones and also hides all of the drainage and electrics around the pool terrace.
The coping stones around the pool were quite easy to install on a bed of tile adhesive. I had originally intended to use an epoxy adhesive, as this would provide the best adhesion to the plastic liner trim as well as the concrete ring beam. However, the three tubs I originally purchased (10kg each) only lasted for the first 5 or 6 tiles and at €80 a tub that would be a significant outlay. Therefore, I reverted to more traditional tile adhesive to finish the coping tiles. The tiles were relatively easy to cut with an angle grinder, but the diamond discs that I purchased on Amazon only lasted 2 or 3 cuts each. A more expensive diamond disc from the local DIY store was far better and showed no signs of giving up cut after cut.
The pedestals were also quite straightforward and once you got the first line of tiles in place you could get into a routine. As with a lot of things on this project, it was a family affair, with my wife making up each of the pedestals and placing them in the right vicinity whilst I laid each tile and made sure that they were level in both directions by adjusting the ‘nut’ on the pedestal.
It is time to head home again, but we will be back out in a couple of weeks to finish off the tiling.
